| Pipes - Artisans and Trademarks 2nd Edition |
|
The second edition of “Cachimbos”, the first in English language has reached the stands (in late October). Title: Pipes - Artisans and Trademarks. This new edition presents 50 new brands and artisans than the previous in Portuguese and also a few new photos of these pipes. The author is honoured to see two new introductory texts besides the preface of the Vicens Lozano (Barcelona Pipa Club) Portuguese edition. These new texts are from two north Americans: Ben Rapaport, the major world authority in Pipe bibliography and author of several books on antique pipes and Gregory L. Pease, a briar pipe scholar and one of the most prestigious USA blender. You can also check the book at the publishers site: Editora Quimera.

The book is out and we already had the bliss to ensure our copy. It’s in the bag. And, my friends, the book isn’t good. The book is, according to our humble opinion, very good. With no exaggeration it’s at the level of any de luxe album, deserving to be translated to all the planets languages. Excellent presentation, excellent paper quality, text, photos, layout. It’s a true Pipe Encyclopaedia as to brands makers and artisans, a mandatory book for each and every pipe smoker in the world. Whoever doesn’t posses it is not a good household chief. To spice up your appetite in a perfectly abusive and illegal way I can’t resist to share with you a few of the book’s images, which will allow you to understand, we do not exaggerate (see photo show below). We foresee a huge success to this work and eagerly await the next editions, reviewed and enlarged, with expectation. If you don’t get yours now don’t complaint later. You have been warned ...
Jorge Macieira

Editor's information (book's countercover)
"José Manuel Lopes was born in Lisbon in 1954. With a degree in Journalism by Escola Superior de de Meios de Comunicação Social (ESMCS), he is a professional journalist since 1982.
Smoker and collector of pipes since his 16 years old, he became a member of Cachimbo Clube de Portugal (CCP - Pipe Club of Portugal) in 1995, of which he is now Chairman. He cooperates regularly with several communication means, and participates in discussion forums at the Internet specialised in pipes and tobacco, namely the weekly magazine of the, «Barcelona Pipa Club/Virtual Pipa Club» and the Groups «Pipalista», «Pipe Smokers», «Pipes.org» and «Alt.smokers.pipes».
He has been present in several international pipe exhibitions and he participates regularly in meetings and international and national championships of pipe smokers.
When pipes appeared in Europe, at the second half of the XVI century, they were somehow surrounded by an exotic aura. Nevertheless, to smoke tobacco in a pipe became so common that Charles Dickens recommended against suicide “bread, cheese, wine and a pipe”. Used at first by the people and then by noblemen and bourgeois, companion of soldiers in the fields of battle, pipes began being associated to intellectuals and artists in the course of the XIX and XX centuries.
As homage to the object itself and to the fascination that surrounds it, this book, using a language at one time informative and passionate, offers to the reader a precise and systematic compendium on manufacturers, craftsmen, brands and reciprocal references. Along more than 1800 entries it enlightens, values and reveals details, describing characteristics, materials and types of production, unveiling shapes, attributes, symbols…. Reason why this is a book addressed, without distinction, to the connoisseurs or to the just curious, to those who have a passion for the pipe and to those who are just now discovering this pleasure, to those who study pipes and to the collectors. A book of cult dedicated to an object of cult. To read and savour.

"This book is the finest contemporary book on the subject the world have seen yet. The author, José Manuel Lopes from Lisbon, has done a truly great work in gathering information and pictures from about 1800 pipe brands, makers and artisans, covering the whole world. You will find information on history, curiosities, characteristics, type of production, grades, symbol, contacts, etc., of each brand. The design and layout of the book is very fine and elegant and the quality of the paper, pictures ant typeface is excellent. This is a book you will spend hours and hours with. The only “drawback” I can mention is that you might end up spending very long time with this book if your Portuguese is as bad as mine. At present the book is only published in Portuguese, but José is looking for a publisher that is willing to publish the book in English - if you have any connections to the publishing business and can help José, please do so - for him and all of us that didn’t pay enough attention in the classroom when Portuguese was on the menu." - Lars Kiel (Denmark), www.danishpipemakers.com

"This is the most beautifull and complere pipe book I have seen (and I have seen a lot). The layout, typographie, colours quality of paper and cover is fantastic. "The Ultimate Pipe Book move over, there's a new sheriff in town!!!! - At the Chicago 2004 pipe show I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Jose Manuel Lopes of Portugal. We met while Jose was doing an interview with Paul Bonaquisti and John Eells. I had no idea why the interview, but after little while it came clear that Jose was putting together a book on pipe makers. I have read the books by Rick Hacker and Rolf Rutzen, and while both have some excellent information, each missed a number of makers that should have been included. I expected Jose's book would also follow suit, and while from the list of makers we talked about I knew it would be impressive, I had no idea how truly in depth he was willing to go. Well now I know, as the book has just arrived at my door." Cachimbos is by far the finest compilation of pipe maker information the world has seen to date. I doubt it will be outdone for generations to come. This is a large table top hard cover that will be a must have for every serious pipe collector! 263 (including index) pages chalked full of information and pictures. Not just pictures, I mean photographs!! High quality crisp detailed photographs! The makers listed will boggle your mind. I have been a pipe enthusiast for 30 plus years and thought I knew a great list of makers names and even some very obscure ones. This book shows me that I know less than nothing as there many makers within the pages that are new names to me. What is really amazing is that Jose has included makers that are fairly new to the world. Names like John Rocheleau of Canada who has been making pipes for less than a year. Talents such as the elusive Random are included.
The only failing is that NO publisher has taken it up, to print the book in English. It is available only in Portuguese. This is not the failing of the author in any way. That being said I am sure that once sales start to increase a publisher will see the potential and offer an English version. Until then though the current edition is an awesome work.!. Michael J. Glukler (USA), www.briarblues.com
"This is, recently, a really "ultimate pipe book". José really made a great job when publishing this gorgeous book. And you are completely right, one can understand all the facts and data without any language problems. (...) I will cordially congratulate to you for this outstanding and gorgeous book, you really made a giant job and the result is, in my opinion "best of the best"! The book is the most important pipe book ever published!" Jorg Lehmann, German collector.
" I want to give you my compliments over it. It's by far the most comprehensive book about pipes and their carvers I have seen. Moreover it's very tidy. And for me who don't understand one word of Portug u ese, it's containing lots of beautiful pictures of pipes. " Bengt Carlson (Suécia), pipemaker
"Une des grandes idées de José Manuel a été de mettre en fin d'article, les coordonnées (postale et internet) des pipiers.". Carl Franz (France), fumeursdepipe@yahoogroupes.fr
"It is simply beautiful! It is a far more substantial work than I even imagined. The work is exhaustive-- certainly the most exhaustive index of pipe makers yet created." F. Sykes Wilford (USA), www.smokingpipes.com
"I must say it has been beautifully produced and presented and I am sure is being well received by your fellow collectors. I am sure that a copy translated into English would sell well in both England and America." Howard Smith (England), Alfred Dunhill Ltd./Dunhill Pipes
" I must be sincere and admit that I did not think that you were working on a true encyclopaedia of pipes, as your project is: before you, nobody in the world did a so great work. I'm not able to realize how you were able to collect so many information about pipe makers, particularly when they refer to brands no more existing." Franco Bolognesi (Italy), www.top-pipes-collection.it
"Este trabajo realizado por nuestro amigo portuguès es descomunal y merece un apoyo total pues es de una utilidad imprescindible para cuantos amamos la pipa." Vicens Lozano (Espanha), Barcelona Pipa Club, www.bpipaclub.com
"This morning I received your wonderful book! Only 3 words: it is fantastic!" Marco Biagini (Italy), pipemaker, Moretti Pipes
Guillaume (France), fumeursdepipe@yahoogroupes.fr
